Any GMO in Ukraine has no bases for legalization – N.Prodanchuk
None of genetically modified organism in Ukraine at this time is registered, so the legal GMOs in the country can not be. About this at a press briefing on Jan. 25, 2011, said Director of the Institute Ecohygiene and Toxicology. by L. Medvedja N. Prodanchuk. He recalled that according to Ukrainian legislation, in foods can be used only one GMO whose safety to human health is proved.
"At this time, neither one of GMOs in Ukraine is not present documents that prove its safety for humans, so far none of GMOs has reason for registration. If in any laboratories there are GMO, it testifies to illegal application of genetically modified organisms ", – N.Prodanchuk has told.
Estimating quantity of illegal GMO in Ukraine, the scientist has assured, that in the market of their foodstuff they " practically are not presented ".
He reported that 3 thousand tests for GMO content, performed in the laboratory of the institute at the request of manufacturers, only 24 were detected GMOs in quantities greater than 0.9%. It was mainly genetically modified soybean, and in ready foodstuff it was found only once in imported breaded fish products.
N.Prodanchuk has noted, that manufacturers concern to the control over content of GMO very carefully, as sanctions for their application are serious enough – prohibition of all production and the penalty for the sum of its cost. "Today, I think the question of a relatively large amount of illegal GMOs is probably not present," - said the ecologist.
He clarified that it was a food market. According to scientists, there is a separate market for animal feed and agricultural raw materials, which have "specific threat". "But the monitoring is carried out continuously, and the greatest threat to the illegal use of GMOs is not found", - assured the Director of the Institute Ecohygiene and Toxicology. of L. Medvedja.
